Disclaimer & Editorial Policy
EV Risk Index is an independent editorial publication covering electric vehicle reliability, recall activity, battery degradation, and total cost of ownership. This page explains what our content is, what it is not, and how readers should use it.
Informational, not advisory
All content on EV Risk Index — including risk scores, editorial assessments, recall summaries, owner knowledge guides, and vehicle reference blocks — is published for informational purposes only. It does not constitute:
- mechanical advice
- legal advice
- financial or investment advice
- warranty or insurance evaluation
- certified safety inspection
- recommendation to buy, sell, hold, lease, or avoid any specific vehicle
We are journalists, researchers, and data analysts. We are not licensed mechanics, lawyers, financial advisors, or automotive safety inspectors. Our content reflects our editorial judgment based on publicly available data from regulators, manufacturer filings, owner-reported sources, and industry reporting.
Verify recall and safety information directly with regulators
Where EV Risk Index cites recall campaigns, safety investigations, or manufacturer remedies, readers should always verify the current status of any specific VIN directly with the relevant regulator of record:
- United States: NHTSA Recalls ↗
- Canada: Transport Canada Road Safety Recalls ↗
- United Kingdom: DVSA Vehicle Recalls ↗
- European Union: EU Safety Gate ↗
- Germany: KBA Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt ↗
- France: Rappel Conso ↗
Recall status can change between the date of our publication and the date you read it. A campaign we describe as “interim remedy” may have reached permanent remedy status. A vehicle we describe as “no active safety recall” may have been subject to a new campaign since publication. Always verify current status with the regulator directly using your specific VIN.
Risk scores are editorial, not predictive
Our numeric risk index (0–100) reflects our editorial assessment of a vehicle year’s historical reliability profile based on known recall activity, documented battery degradation patterns, repair cost observations, and platform maturity. It is not a prediction of what will happen to any individual vehicle. A well-maintained example of a high-risk vehicle may prove entirely reliable. A neglected example of a low-risk vehicle may not. Individual outcomes depend on factors we cannot assess from public data, including maintenance history, driving patterns, climate, charging habits, and prior accident history.
Silhouette images are illustrative
The vehicle silhouettes shown on each page represent the general body-style category (SUV, sedan, truck, etc.) rather than the specific make or model being described. They are labeled accordingly. Color tinting reflects the vehicle’s risk-index band (green for low, amber for moderate, red for high) — not any characteristic of the actual vehicle pictured.
