Audi e-tron thermal management failure (2019—2020)
Diagnostic code reference
Reading codes off a Audi e-tron service invoice? Look them up in our OBD-II DTC database →
Reported symptoms
- 'Battery system service required' or 'Electric drive system fault' warning on cluster
- Reduced charging speed, inconsistent charge curve, or charging session interruption
- Reduced range or unexpectedly low state of charge readings
- Manufacturer correspondence regarding battery inspection or seal-related service campaigns
- Smoke, fire, or thermal event reported (rare but documented in regulatory filings during the recall period)
- Service center indication that the battery requires sealed-system inspection
Questions to ask
- Has VIN [VIN] been inspected per the active battery sealing and recall campaign, and what was the result of the inspection?
- What is the production date of the high-voltage battery, and is this date within the affected scope of the campaign?
- Has the battery's insulation resistance been measured and documented as part of the inspection?
Documents to request
- Diagnostic report listing all stored and pending fault codes, including any related to insulation resistance and thermal management
- Written confirmation of the recall or campaign reference number applied to the VIN
- Battery insulation resistance reading taken at the conclusion of the inspection
Pre-service evidence
- Photograph cluster warning messages at the time they appeared
- Save all Audi and dealer correspondence regarding battery inspections, recall notices, or service campaigns
- If the vehicle has been towed at any point, retain the tow receipt and any roadside assistance reports
Service advisor interaction
- Record the full name of the service advisor and the technician performing the work
- Note whether the visit is classified as a recall, a service campaign, or a goodwill repair — these classifications affect future warranty rights and resale documentation
- If the advisor states verbally that the vehicle is not subject to the campaign but the build date and battery production date fall within the affected scope, request written clarification before leaving the dealership
- Document any verbal characterization of insulation resistance readings or fault codes that differs from the written diagnostic report
Repair authorization
- Recall remedies are performed at no charge to the owner; do not authorize any charge for parts or labor associated with the documented recall
- If a diagnostic fee is presented, request written confirmation of whether the fee is refundable if the issue is later determined to be recall- or warranty-covered
- If high-voltage battery work is proposed beyond the recall scope, request written warranty determination before signing the repair authorization
- Repair authorization signatures often include language permitting additional related work — read the document and decline blanket additional work in advance
Post-service verification
- Confirm no warning messages on the cluster after a full ignition cycle and a complete charge cycle
- Verify charging session initiates and completes normally on both AC and DC charging
- Confirm range estimate at full charge is consistent with the vehicle's specification
- Verify the repair order identifies the correct recall or campaign reference number
- Confirm the parts invoice lists all components inspected or replaced, with part numbers and production dates
- Retain a copy of the post-repair insulation resistance reading and any state of health data for ongoing reference

Warranty notes
- Audi has issued recall and service campaigns associated with the e-tron battery sealing concern in multiple regions. The applicable campaign for VIN [VIN] should be confirmed in writing.
- The high-voltage battery is covered under Audi's electric component warranty. Coverage period and conditions vary by region and should be confirmed in writing.
- Recall remedies are performed at no charge to the owner regardless of vehicle age, mileage, or warranty status. A recall remains open until performed.
- Repairs performed under goodwill rather than warranty do not extend the warranty period. Confirm in writing which classification applies.
Observational patterns
Insulation resistance readings are part of the diagnostic data set for high-voltage battery inspections and can be requested explicitly. Verbal characterizations of battery condition are not a substitute for the recorded reading.
Battery production dates have varied across the rollout. Build date alone does not determine whether a vehicle falls within the affected scope; the battery production date is the operative reference and should be verified during inspection.
Goodwill classifications have been applied to some campaign-related work in service records. Goodwill classification does not preserve the recall paper trail in the same way that recall classification does, and the distinction has been cited in subsequent disputes.
Thermal management warnings can appear during charging or driving and are not always linked to a single root cause. Diagnosis through the full fault history, rather than the actively stored codes alone, improves the accuracy of the determination.
