Active EV recall campaigns
351 recall campaigns tracked across the electric vehicles we cover — the 21 most significant are featured below, with the complete searchable index further down. Sources: NHTSA, Transport Canada, KBA, DVSA, and other regulators. Always verify with your jurisdiction's authority using your VIN.
If your EV has an open recall
A short owner playbook.
A recall notice is a regulatory action — not a sales letter. Treat it like a legal record. Document everything. Most recall remedies are free of charge to the owner; the steps below protect that right.
- Check the recall against your VIN directly with the manufacturer or your regulator. A recall covers a campaign — not always your specific vehicle. The regulator lookup links are at the bottom of this page.
- Save a screenshot or PDF of the official recall notice — including the campaign number, your VIN's eligibility status, and the date you checked.
- Call an authorized dealer for your make. Ask whether the remedy is currently available, whether it is a final fix or an interim measure, and how long the appointment is expected to take.
- Keep every repair order, invoice, courtesy-vehicle agreement, and email. Recall service is part of your vehicle's permanent history and affects future resale.
- If a dealer refuses service, says you must pay, or delays without a clear written reason, document the conversation and file a complaint. If your VIN qualifies for an active recall remedy, an authorized dealer generally should not charge you for the covered repair or refuse service without a clear written reason — see the rules below.
Is a recall repair free if my EV is out of warranty?
Yes — in nearly all cases. A safety recall is separate from your manufacturer's warranty. An expired warranty does not remove your right to a free recall remedy. The rules differ slightly between Canada and the United States.
↳ Canada
Safety recall repairs are performed by authorized dealers at no cost to the owner. Under the Strengthening Motor Vehicle Safety for Canadians Act (in force since 2018), the Minister of Transport can order manufacturers to pay for recall repairs so consumers do not bear the cost. Transport Canada does not present a U.S.-style 15-year free-remedy rule on its consumer recall guidance pages — the obligation runs with the recall itself.
Verify by VIN through the Transport Canada Road Safety Recalls database or your manufacturer's recall lookup tool.
↳ United States
Federal law requires manufacturers to provide a free recall remedy — but eligibility is age-limited. NHTSA states: "In order to be eligible for a free remedy, the vehicle cannot be more than 15 years old on the date the defect or noncompliance is determined." Vehicles older than 15 years on that date are still affected but may be charged for the repair.
Verify by VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup tool or the manufacturer's website.
EV Risk Index is not a law firm and the summary above is informational. Owners denied a recall remedy should escalate to the manufacturer's customer line first, then to the regulator. EVRI's complaint templates include sample language for both jurisdictions.
Repair invoice review
Was I charged for a recall repair?
Some EV owners are charged for diagnostics, software updates, high-voltage inspections, ICCU work, battery service, or rearview-camera repairs that may overlap with an open recall campaign. The first sign is usually language on the repair order that matches what's in the recall notice — the same fault code, the same campaign-adjacent symptom description, or the same part numbers.
EV Risk Index's AI Invoice Analyzer reviews repair orders, dealer estimates, and service histories to identify possible recall overlap, duplicate labour, unexplained diagnostic charges, and missed escalation points. It organizes the timeline, compares repair language against the recall campaigns documented on this site, and prepares the questions you should ask the dealer, manufacturer, or regulator.
Analyze my repair invoiceThe Analyzer does not determine legal liability, guarantee reimbursement, or replace a regulator, lawyer, mechanic, or manufacturer decision. It helps organize owner-provided documents, compare repair language against known recall and failure patterns, and prepare clearer questions for escalation.

Before you buy
Buying a used EV? Check recall and repair history first.
A used EV can look clean in the photos and still carry unresolved recall history, repeated high-voltage repairs, software-validation failures, battery module replacements, or dealer service notes that point to a known platform issue. The price discount you're seeing may be the market pricing those risks in.
- Check the VIN for open recalls in the regulator database
- Ask the seller for the complete dealer service history
- Look for repeated visits for the same warning light or system fault
- Confirm whether recall remedies were completed, delayed, or repeated
- Cross-reference repair language with documented campaigns on this site
- Run invoices and service records through the Analyzer before purchase

The Analyzer's review covers seven patterns most often relevant to EV owners reviewing repair history or comparing dealer charges against a known recall:
- Possible recall overlap based on model, year, symptoms, and repair description
- Charges that may relate to a covered recall remedy
- Repeated visits for the same warning light or system fault
- Duplicate labour entries or unexplained diagnostic charges
- High-voltage, ICCU, contactor, charging, software, and camera-related patterns
- Missing campaign numbers or unclear dealer notes
- Questions to raise with the dealer or manufacturer before approving more work
EVRI's Analyzer is a documentation tool, not a regulator. It helps owners organize evidence, identify patterns, and prepare escalation questions. It does not determine legal liability or guarantee reimbursement. See our methodology for how recalls feed into the broader EVRI risk score.
Frequently asked questions about EV recalls
Plain-language answers to the questions owners actually type. Reviewed against Transport Canada and NHTSA guidance; verify the specifics with your jurisdiction's regulator before acting.
What should I do first if my EV has an open recall?
Verify the recall against your VIN directly — either through your manufacturer's recall lookup tool or your country's regulator (Transport Canada, NHTSA, KBA, or DVSA). A recall campaign applies to a range of vehicles, not always to yours specifically.
If your VIN is affected, save a copy of the official notice, call an authorized dealer to confirm the remedy is available, schedule the appointment, and keep every document the dealer gives you.
Is a recall repair free if my EV is out of warranty?
Yes, in nearly all cases. A safety recall is separate from the manufacturer's standard warranty, and an expired warranty does not remove your right to a free recall remedy.
In Canada, recall repairs are performed at no cost by authorized dealers, and Transport Canada does not present a U.S.-style age cap for free remedies on its consumer recall guidance. In the United States, NHTSA requires the remedy to be free if the vehicle was up to 15 years old on the date the defect was determined. Owners of vehicles older than that may still need the repair but could be charged for it.
Can a dealer refuse to perform a recall repair?
If your VIN qualifies for an active recall remedy, an authorized dealer generally should not charge you for the covered repair or refuse service without a clear written reason. Real-world exceptions exist — parts unavailable, the remedy not yet released, your VIN not eligible, imported-vehicle complications, or dealer capacity — but those are explanations, not bypasses.
If a dealer refuses, claims the part is unavailable indefinitely, attempts to charge you, or delays without explanation, document the conversation and escalate. First, call the manufacturer's customer service line. If that fails, file a complaint with your regulator (Transport Canada in Canada, NHTSA in the US). EVRI's complaint templates include sample language for both steps.
Can a dealer charge me for diagnosing a recall-related issue?
It depends. If your VIN qualifies for an active recall and the dealer is performing the covered remedy, the recall repair itself should generally be free, and the diagnostics directly linked to that recall should generally be covered too. Diagnostic fees become harder to read when the dealer says the symptoms are "not related to the recall" but uses language on the repair order that overlaps with the campaign description — fault codes, system names, or part numbers that appear in the recall notice.
If the language on your invoice looks connected to a recall but you were charged, ask for a written explanation. EVRI's AI Invoice Analyzer can compare your repair description against the recall campaigns documented on this site and flag possible overlap to ask about.
How can I tell if my repair should have been covered by a recall?
Compare these elements against the official recall notice for your model: your VIN's eligibility, the model year, the symptoms you reported, the campaign number on any recall communication you received, the dealer's repair description, and the part numbers on the invoice. If two or more of those line up with the recall, you have a reasonable basis to ask the dealer for a written explanation of why the work was billed instead of covered.
The AI Invoice Analyzer organizes that comparison automatically — uploading the repair order and the recall notice together is the fastest way to see whether language patterns match. It is a documentation tool, not a regulator decision.
Can the AI Analyzer find issues a dealer missed?
The Analyzer reviews owner-provided documents for patterns the dealer may not have explained clearly: repeated symptoms across multiple visits, recurring fault codes, recall-adjacent language on the repair order, unexplained diagnostic fees, repair descriptions that look inconsistent with the invoice total, and missing campaign numbers in dealer notes.
It cannot make a legal finding, guarantee reimbursement, or replace a regulator decision. What it does is help owners surface evidence, organize the timeline, and prepare clearer questions to ask the dealer, manufacturer, or regulator — which is how most successful escalations start.
What if the recall remedy is not yet available?
It happens. When a manufacturer issues a recall before the fix is engineered, the notice typically explains the timeline and any interim measures owners should take (such as a "park outside" advisory or a software limitation).
Save the original notice, follow any interim instructions, and check your VIN status every 30–60 days. If the wait extends past what the manufacturer originally communicated, ask in writing for an updated timeline — and keep that response.
What if the dealer says my problem is not covered by the recall?
A dealer may correctly determine that your specific issue is not the defect described in the recall — recalls are narrow. But if your symptoms match the recall description, ask for the diagnostic in writing, save it, and request a second opinion from a different authorized dealer of the same brand.
If two authorized dealers reach different conclusions, that itself is information worth escalating to the manufacturer and the regulator.
Can I sell an EV with an open recall?
Yes, but you should disclose it. Disclosure rules vary by jurisdiction and seller type, but a known open recall can affect buyer trust, vehicle-inspection results, and resale value. Failing to disclose a known open recall can also create legal exposure in some jurisdictions, and buyers can perform a VIN lookup themselves before purchase.
The cleaner path is to complete the recall remedy before listing. It is free in the overwhelming majority of cases, and the resale price is almost always higher on a recall-current vehicle.
Does an open recall affect my EV's resale value?
Often yes. Open recalls — especially battery thermal, high-voltage, or "park outside" recalls — visibly depress private and dealer-trade-in values. Informed buyers check the VIN and discount accordingly; some refuse the trade entirely.
A completed recall remedy with documentation usually restores most or all of that lost value. Save the repair order and any updated firmware version notes.
Are Canadian and U.S. recalls the same?
Often yes — most major manufacturers issue parallel recalls in both countries when a defect affects vehicles sold in each market. But the campaign numbers, eligible VIN ranges, and remedy availability dates can differ.
A vehicle sold in Canada is governed by Transport Canada's Motor Vehicle Safety Act. A vehicle sold in the US is governed by NHTSA under federal law. If you cross-shop used vehicles between the two countries, check both regulator databases.
What documents should I keep after a recall repair?
Keep the official recall notice with the campaign number, the appointment confirmation, the repair order (showing the recall campaign performed), any updated software version notes, a record of any courtesy-vehicle or rental coverage provided, and the technician's name.
These documents are part of your vehicle's service history. They affect future resale, future warranty claims, and any complaint you might need to escalate if the remedy turns out to be incomplete.
Can I file a complaint about an unresolved EV recall?
Yes — and you should. Complaints filed with your regulator are part of how patterns become formal investigations. Even a single well-documented complaint matters.
In Canada, file with Transport Canada. In the US, file with NHTSA. EVRI publishes free templates with the language and structure regulators respond to. As we say in our methodology: documentation is the only language manufacturers reliably respond to.
