Questions to ask

Pose these to the service advisor at intake. Request answers in writing or via email.
  1. Has VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) [VIN] received the full battery module replacement, partial replacement, or only the interim BMS software update?
  2. What is the production date of the replacement battery, if installed? Earlier replacement batteries were sourced from the same suppliers and have themselves been re-recalled in some cases.
  3. Will the warranty period for the high-voltage battery be reset following replacement, or does the original ownership period apply?

Documents to request

Each item should be received in writing before authorizing repair work.
  • Parts invoice showing the part numbers and production dates of replacement battery modules
  • Repair order documenting which modules were replaced and which were retained
  • Written warranty coverage statement specific to the replaced battery components

Pre-service evidence

Capture before drop-off. Once the vehicle leaves your possession, proving prior condition becomes significantly harder.
  • Photograph the cluster warning messages and any state of charge limitation indicators before drop-off
  • Record the maximum charge percentage achievable on the existing battery prior to replacement
  • Note odometer reading at drop-off and at pickup

Service advisor interaction

Operational notes specific to the conversation at the service desk.
  • Record the full name of the service advisor and the technician performing the work
  • Note whether the visit is classified as a recall remedy, a customer satisfaction program, or a goodwill repair — these classifications affect future warranty rights
  • If the advisor describes the BMS software update as a 'fix' rather than an interim measure, request written clarification, since the documented remedy includes physical battery replacement
  • Document whether the dealer indicates the replacement battery is a new production unit or a remanufactured assembly — this distinction has been raised in subsequent disputes

Repair authorization

Cautions before signing.
  • Recall remedies are performed at no charge to the owner; do not authorize any charge for parts or labor associated with the documented recall
  • If diagnostic fees are presented for issues the dealer claims are unrelated to the recall, request written documentation of which fault codes are recall-related and which are not, before authorization
  • If the dealer indicates a partial replacement is sufficient, request the basis for this determination in writing, since the official remedy specifies module-level replacement under defined criteria
  • Repair authorization signatures often include language permitting additional related work — read the document and decline blanket additional work in advance

Post-service verification

Complete before leaving the service location. Issues that surface after departure are operationally harder to attribute to the visit.
  • Verify the maximum state of charge limit has been removed and the vehicle charges to 100%
  • Confirm no warning messages on the cluster after a full ignition cycle and a complete charge cycle
  • Verify the modified BMS software has been removed if a full battery replacement was performed
  • Confirm range estimate at 100% is consistent with the original EPA estimate for the vehicle
  • Confirm the repair order identifies the recall reference number and lists the modules or assemblies replaced
  • Retain a copy of the post-repair battery state of health reading for ongoing reference

Warranty notes

  • GM has issued multiple service campaigns and warranty extensions associated with this battery defect cluster, covering both Bolt EV and Bolt EUV. The applicable extension and remaining coverage period for VIN [VIN] should be confirmed in writing.
  • Replacement batteries installed under the recall typically carry their own warranty period from installation date, but this varies and should be confirmed in writing.
  • Vehicles with ongoing state of charge limitations imposed by modified BMS software remain eligible for full physical battery replacement under the recall; software-only mitigation is not a closed remedy.
  • Repairs performed under goodwill rather than warranty do not extend the warranty period. Confirm in writing which classification applies.

Observational patterns

Bolt EV and Bolt EUV share the same battery architecture and the same recall scope. Service campaigns issued for one model frequently apply to the other, and the recall remedy paper trail should reference the campaign rather than relying on model-name distinctions.

Vehicles that have received the modified BMS software but not the physical battery replacement remain within scope of the recall remedy. The interim software mitigation has been characterized in some service interactions as a complete fix, but the documented remedy includes module replacement under defined criteria.

Replacement batteries installed during the recall remedy have themselves been subject to subsequent campaigns when the production date falls within an affected supplier window. Production date documentation on the replacement modules is operationally relevant.

Outdoor parking advisories issued during the recall period are part of the manufacturer's safety guidance and have appeared as evidence in fire-related insurance and litigation matters. Compliance with these advisories should be documented through correspondence retention.
