BMW i3 range loss (2014—2022)

BMW i3 · 2014—2022 · all trims

Reported symptoms

  • Range estimate at full charge significantly below the EPA-rated original for the build year and configuration
  • Range Extender (REx) variant: gasoline engine fails to engage, engages late, or runs roughly when state of charge drops below the activation threshold
  • Range Extender variant: gasoline tank, fuel pump, or related fuel-system service required, often on a vehicle that has been driven primarily as a BEV
  • Battery state of health below expected for the build date
  • Charging speed at DC fast charging sustained well below the vehicle's specification
  • Cluster warning related to battery, range extender, or high-voltage system

Questions to ask

Pose these to the service advisor at intake. Request answers in writing or via email.
  1. What is the current state of health of the battery, expressed as a percentage of original capacity, and how does this compare to the value expected for the build year and configuration?
  2. If VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) [VIN] is a Range Extender (REx) variant, when was the gasoline engine last serviced, and are there any active recalls or service campaigns affecting the REx system?
  3. Has the carbon fiber body been previously repaired? If so, was the repair performed at a BMW-authorized i-specific body shop?

Documents to request

Each item should be received in writing before authorizing repair work.
  • Battery state of health diagnostic report, with the raw measurement data and the criteria for the percentage calculation
  • Service history, particularly any prior REx engine service for variants so equipped
  • If body repair is involved, written confirmation that repair facility is BMW-authorized for i3 carbon fiber work

Pre-service evidence

Capture before drop-off. Once the vehicle leaves your possession, proving prior condition becomes significantly harder.
  • Photograph the cluster showing the current range estimate at full charge and the battery capacity bar display
  • If REx-equipped, record observations of when the REx engages (state of charge percentage), how it sounds, and any unusual behavior
  • Save records of any prior body repair, including the facility's BMW i3 authorization documentation

Service advisor interaction

Operational notes specific to the conversation at the service desk.
  • Record the full name of the service advisor and the technician performing the diagnostic
  • BMW dealer i3-specific expertise has aged with the vehicle; some service centers may have limited current familiarity. Confirm in writing that the technician has worked with i3 systems recently.
  • REx-equipped i3 vehicles have a fuel system that may have been little-used on vehicles primarily driven as electric; fuel system service can produce findings that surprise long-time owners
  • Carbon fiber body damage assessment is operationally distinct from conventional body damage assessment; insurance adjusters and non-BMW shops may not recognize the structural implications

Repair authorization

Cautions before signing.
  • Some dealers charge for state-of-health diagnostics on out-of-warranty vehicles. Confirm in writing whether the diagnostic fee is refundable if warranty replacement is determined to apply.
  • If high-voltage battery work is recommended, request the warranty determination in writing before authorization, including the battery state of health threshold being applied
  • Body repair authorization on a carbon fiber vehicle should specify the facility's BMW i3 authorization status; do not authorize structural repair at a non-authorized facility
  • Repair authorization signatures often include language permitting additional related work — read the document and decline blanket additional work in advance

Post-service verification

Complete before leaving the service location. Issues that surface after departure are operationally harder to attribute to the visit.
  • Verify the state-of-health reading from the diagnostic matches the value stated by the advisor
  • If REx-equipped, verify the gasoline engine engages at the expected state of charge threshold and runs smoothly
  • Confirm no warning messages on the cluster after a full ignition cycle and short drive
  • Conduct a verified DC fast charging session before traveling more than a short distance from the dealership
  • If body repair was performed, inspect the repair quality and request the i-specific repair documentation
  • Retain the dealership's diagnostic readout for ongoing reference

Warranty notes

  • BMW i3 high-voltage battery components are covered under BMW's New Vehicle Limited Warranty and the high-voltage battery component warranty (8 years / 100,000 miles in most US markets). Coverage period and conditions for VIN [VIN] should be confirmed in writing.
  • Many i3 vehicles are now outside the basic warranty period; out-of-warranty repairs at BMW service rates can be substantial. Independent shops with BMW-i specialty experience may offer alternatives, with implications for parts and remaining vehicle warranty.
  • REx system components have their own warranty considerations; the REx engine is mechanically simpler than a conventional ICE but follows BMW's warranty terms for the gasoline-engine portion.
  • Repairs performed under goodwill rather than warranty do not extend the warranty period. Confirm in writing which classification applies.

Observational patterns

The BMW i3 occupies a unique position — a carbon fiber-bodied EV with optional gasoline range extender, reaching the older end of the EV market. Service expertise for i3-specific elements (CFRP repair, REx engine, older battery chemistry) varies between BMW dealerships as the platform ages.

REx-equipped vehicles have fuel systems that may be under-used by owners who drive primarily as electric. Fuel-system findings (degraded fuel, fuel pump issues, evaporative system errors) can surprise long-term owners and produce unexpected service costs.

Carbon fiber body construction means even minor collision damage can require specialty repair facilities. Insurance settlements on i3 collisions sometimes underestimate the cost of proper structural repair, particularly when non-i3-authorized shops are used.

Battery state of health for older i3 vehicles is best evaluated against the build-year-specific original capacity. Generic 'percentage of original' figures can be misleading without reference to which production batch the original was from.
