Reported symptoms
- iDrive infotainment screen freezes, reboots unexpectedly, or becomes unresponsive during driving
- Theater Screen (rear seat display) fails to deploy, fails to retract, or becomes unresponsive
- Executive Lounge rear seat features (massage, recline, climate) inactive or behaving inconsistently
- Optional all-wheel steering inactive, intermittent, or behaving inconsistently
- DC fast charging session refuses to initiate, terminates early, or sustains charge rate well below specification
- BMW Connected app reports vehicle errors or shows feature inconsistencies
Questions to ask
- How many open recall and software campaigns currently apply to VIN [VIN]?
- Which features are equipped on VIN [VIN] (Theater Screen, Executive Lounge, all-wheel steering, M70 variant), and which campaigns specifically address these features?
- If a Theater Screen or Executive Lounge feature is reported as defective, what is the diagnostic procedure for these subsystems?
Documents to request
- Diagnostic report listing all stored, pending, and historical fault codes from all affected modules including rear-seat and Theater Screen control units
- Repair order with technician notes, including a list of every campaign reference number addressed during the visit
- Documentation of any feature-specific procedures applied (Theater Screen, Executive Lounge, all-wheel steering)
Pre-service evidence
- Screenshot or video-record any iDrive, Theater Screen, or rear-seat feature defects at the time they occur
- Note specific incidents — system reboots, Theater Screen deployment failures, rear-seat function issues, ambient conditions — with dates
- If any rear-seat or Executive Lounge feature is reported defective, document the specific function and the conditions under which the defect occurs
Service advisor interaction
- Record the full name of the service advisor and the technician performing the work
- Premium-tier BMW service expectations include amenities (loaner vehicle, vehicle pickup, etc.); these are operational courtesies, not warranty entitlements, and any commitments should be documented in writing
- The i7's distinctive features (Theater Screen, Executive Lounge, all-wheel steering) require specialized diagnostic procedures. Confirm in writing that the technician has worked with these subsystems recently.
- BMW dealer service may bundle additional inspections or services with a software update visit. If presented as recommended, request the basis for each recommendation in writing before authorization.
Repair authorization
- Recall and software campaign work is performed at no charge to the owner; do not authorize any charge for parts or labor associated with these campaigns
- If a diagnostic fee is presented, request written confirmation of whether the fee is refundable if the issue is later determined to be recall- or campaign-covered
- If Theater Screen or Executive Lounge component replacement is quoted, request written warranty classification before signing the repair authorization
- Repair authorization signatures often include language permitting additional related work — read the document and decline blanket additional work in advance
Post-service verification
- Verify the iDrive system functions normally without unexpected freezes or reboots during a short test drive
- If equipped, verify Theater Screen deploys, retracts, and operates normally across its software functions
- If equipped, test Executive Lounge rear-seat features (massage, recline, climate, audio) for correct operation
- If equipped, test all-wheel steering operation across a representative range of speeds and turning conditions
- Conduct a verified DC fast charging session at a CCS-compatible fast charger before traveling more than a short distance from the dealership
- Confirm the repair order matches the work performed and references the correct campaigns

Warranty notes
- BMW i7 components are covered under BMW's New Vehicle Limited Warranty and the high-voltage battery component warranty (8 years / 100,000 miles in most US markets). Coverage period and conditions for VIN [VIN] should be confirmed in writing.
- Theater Screen and Executive Lounge components are covered under the basic warranty during the warranty period; warranty determination for these distinctive components should be confirmed in writing on a per-component basis.
- Recall remedies, when issued, are performed at no charge to the owner regardless of vehicle age, mileage, or warranty status.
- Repairs performed under goodwill rather than warranty do not extend the warranty period. Confirm in writing which classification applies.
Observational patterns
The BMW i7 is BMW's flagship EV sedan with distinctive features (Theater Screen, Executive Lounge, optional all-wheel steering) that introduce diagnostic complexity beyond standard EV service. Technician familiarity with these subsystems varies between dealer locations.
Premium-tier dealer service experiences can include verbal commitments that exceed the written record. Material commitments — loaner duration, completion timing, scope of inspection — should be confirmed in writing.
Multi-feature vehicles produce multi-campaign service situations. A general 'software updated' note without enumerated campaign and feature references creates ambiguity about which specific issues are closed.
OTA delivery does not always produce a corresponding entry in the dealer-side service record, particularly for feature-specific updates affecting Theater Screen or Executive Lounge functions.
