Reported symptoms
- Third-row bench seat appears wide enough to seat three occupants but is equipped with only two seatbelts
- Three-position bench in the third row missing center-position seatbelt
- No clear visual indication that the center third-row position is not for occupant use
- Owner letter received from Volkswagen referencing recall 90A2 / NHTSA campaign 25V233000
- Stop-sale notice on the vehicle at the dealership level
- Brake warning light displays an amber ISO symbol rather than the required red 'BRAKE' lettering during a brake-system fault (separate FMVSS 135/101 recall)
Questions to ask
- Has the 90A2 third-row trim-piece installation been completed on this VIN , and is the trim piece part of the as-built configuration or installed afterward?
- Has the brake-warning-indicator software update (FMVSS 135/101 remedy) been applied, and what is the cluster software version before and after?
- If purchasing a used ID.Buzz, has the stop-sale been lifted for this VIN and is the recall remedy documented in the service history?
Documents to request
- Repair order describing the trim-piece installation, including the trim part number
- Repair order describing the software update for the brake-warning indicator, including software versions before and after
- List of all open recall campaigns associated with this VIN at the time of the visit
Pre-service evidence
- Photograph the third-row bench before drop-off — both the bench width and the seatbelt positions — to document the as-received state
- Retain any owner letter received from VW or NHTSA regarding the recall, including notification date
- If purchasing used, request a copy of the recall completion history before the transaction closes
Service advisor interaction
- Record the service advisor's name and the date and time of each conversation
- Note whether the visit is classified as recall (free), warranty, or paid — both 90A2 and the brake-indicator software update are recall work at no owner cost
- If the dealer indicates the trim piece is on backorder, request a written timeline for the part and any interim guidance (e.g., do not allow a third occupant in the third row until the trim is installed)
- Document any discussion of the stop-sale status if the vehicle was purchased used during or shortly after the active campaign window
Repair authorization
- Recall work is at no cost. Any charges in connection with the 90A2 or brake-indicator remedies should be confirmed in writing before authorizing
- If the dealership recommends a paid 'inspection' to determine recall applicability, request that the inspection be classified as recall-related and performed at no cost — VIN lookup at NHTSA.gov or in the dealer's DCS system is the appropriate verification method
- Repair authorization forms may include language permitting additional related work — read carefully and decline blanket scope additions
- If the trim piece is on backorder, do not authorize an alternative modification that has not been approved by Volkswagen as part of the campaign
Post-service verification
- Verify the third-row bench center position is physically blocked by the trim piece and is not usable as a seating position
- Confirm the seatbelt warning system and any displayed seat-occupancy indicators behave correctly for the two remaining third-row positions
- Verify the brake-warning indicator now displays the required red 'BRAKE' text or compliant symbols during a brake-system check (if a check is available without inducing a fault)
- Confirm the repair order references each campaign applied and the installed trim part number
- Note odometer reading and any test-drive distance at pickup

Warranty notes
- Recall work is performed at no cost. Diagnostic or labor charges in connection with the campaign should be confirmed in writing before authorization.
- The 90A2 remedy is a permanent modification — the trim piece narrows the third row and reduces total occupant capacity from a notional three to two in the rear row. This is the manufacturer's compliance solution and is not reversible at the dealer.
- Owners considering a third-row child seat installation in the affected position should verify with VW whether the trim piece installation creates any constraints. Specific child-seat compatibility guidance falls outside the recall remedy itself.
- Repairs performed under goodwill do not extend the warranty period.
Observational patterns
The ID.Buzz launched in the US in late 2024 as a 2024-2025 model. The 2024-2025 production from the Hanover, Germany plant carried two distinct compliance defects identified within months of launch: third-row seatbelt non-compliance (FMVSS 208) and brake-warning indicator non-compliance (FMVSS 135/101). Both remedies are dealer-applied and free.
The 2026 model year was skipped for the US market. ID.Buzz is scheduled to return as a 2027 model with revised configuration. The current 2024-2025 inventory pool is the entire affected vehicle population.
The third-row trim-piece remedy is a permanent modification — the bench width is physically narrowed. Marketing materials and seller listings of recall-completed vehicles may continue to describe a 'three-position third row' that no longer exists post-remedy. Owners should confirm the as-delivered configuration during used purchase due diligence.
Brake-system fault display was discovered through internal Volkswagen testing in February 2025 and traced to incorrect coding of the instrument cluster's data container. Pre-recall vehicles displayed an amber ISO icon during a brake-system fault rather than the FMVSS-required red 'BRAKE' lettering. Owners experiencing brake warnings on pre-remedy vehicles should not assume the indicator color reflects severity.
