BMS: Battery Management System

The electronic system that manages a rechargeable battery (cell or battery pack), such as by protecting the battery from operating outside its safe operating area.

Deep Dive

The BMS monitors the state of the battery, calculating secondary data, reporting that data, controlling its environment, authenticating it, and balancing it. In EVs, the BMS is crucial for ensuring that cells stay balanced (have the same voltage) and do not overheat during fast charging or high-discharge driving.

Common Symptoms

  • Reduced range estimation
  • Sudden drop in State of Charge (SOC)
  • Charging sessions stopping prematurely
  • Turtle mode (power limited)
