Questions to ask

Pose these to the service advisor at intake. Request answers in writing or via email.
  1. Has VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) [VIN] been inspected per any active service campaign or technical service bulletin related to the high-voltage system, charging, or iDrive software?
  2. What software version is currently installed on the high-voltage controller, battery management system, and iDrive, and what version corresponds to the most recently released remedy?
  3. Has the issue been reproduced at a BMW-authorized fast charger, or only on third-party networks?

Documents to request

Each item should be received in writing before authorizing repair work.

Pre-service evidence

Capture before drop-off. Once the vehicle leaves your possession, proving prior condition becomes significantly harder.

Service advisor interaction

Operational notes specific to the conversation at the service desk.

Repair authorization

Cautions before signing.

Post-service verification

Complete before leaving the service location. Issues that surface after departure are operationally harder to attribute to the visit.

Email templates

Documentation-focused templates for service correspondence. Tap copy to use. Subject and body are kept verbatim — paste them as-is into your email client.

Observational patterns

Charging session failures are sometimes attributed to charging network behavior. Vehicle-side BECM logs can be requested and are the more reliable source for determining whether the vehicle terminated the session.

Battery preconditioning logic engages automatically when navigation is set to a fast charger; failure to precondition with navigation set is a vehicle-side condition rather than a user-behavior issue. Verbal attribution of charging issues to user behavior should be cross-referenced against the recorded preconditioning state.

iDrive 8 software updates have addressed multiple charging-related and display-related concerns over the early production period. The current software version, and which campaign closed which specific issue, is operationally important documentation.

Cross-platform pattern with the BMW iX means that software updates released for one model can apply to the other. Cross-referencing iX campaigns can be operationally relevant for the i4.
